Where is Calvinia situated?
The rural town Calvinia, is situated to the
south of the Hantam Mountains in the North West Cape, South Africa.
It is mostly sheep farming area. If the
Calvinia region has a good rain year, the farmers have bountiful wheat
harvests. A few rivers are dammed-up and used to irrigate enormous
lucerne fields. The lucerne harvest comes in handy during the periodic
droughts, which eventually follows.
This mainly farming community has excellent historical sites, beautiful
nature scenes and warm hospitality. It's also the place where the
painter, Marie Smith works and lives.
